In an Unmotivated world, setting actionable goals would be as simple as writing down what you want to achieve and working towards it without fail every day until you reach your goal. Unfortunately, achieving this level of goal-setting perfection is not always possible — at least not immediately. However, setting actionable goals that motivate you can be done very easily once you know how to do it right! And the Interesting is that anyone can do it! Step 1: Identify goals and big rocks

Start with a general goal, like I want to start exercising again, and then break it down into smaller, specific goals. Identify your big rocks—the steps you need to take to achieve that overall goal. If exercising is your overall goal, for example, you might identify your big rocks as making a plan for how you will exercise, finding an accountability partner, or joining a gym. Each of these will be identified as an action item within your plan.

Step 2: Establish measurements

You’ve reached your goal but how will you know? What benchmarks should you consider? Make sure your goals are measurable so that you can track progress towards them. For example, if you’re trying to get fit for an upcoming wedding or reunion, your goal could be to lose 20 pounds by June 1st; that gives you a specific date and set of measurements (i.e., weight on a scale) to help keep yourself motivated throughout the process. If your motivation is waning, tie each goal back to its measurement.

Step 3: Create a master plan

Decide what your goals are going to be and how you will achieve them. Before you start any goal-setting, it’s important to have a short-term plan in place. Write out what your daily tasks will be and then break them down even further by the day. For example, if your task is to Write an Article on Monday, break that down into more manageable steps. Sign on at 9 a.m., get coffee, brainstorm for 30 minutes, research for another 30 minutes; once you feel you have enough information from research, write from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; take lunch at 12:30 p.m.; etc.

Step 4: Expand your vision

Before you start working on a goal, take a second to think about your larger vision. The reason it’s so easy to lose motivation is that we focus too much on one thing and get tunnel vision—the bigger picture helps us keep things in perspective and realize that our goals are all part of something bigger than ourselves. So remember: This isn’t about setting a goal for yourself, it’s about establishing an identity for yourself and becoming someone who can achieve goals. What does that mean? It means picturing what success will look like, how you’ll feel when you reach your destination, and who you’ll become after reaching your goal. Ask yourself: How do I want my life to be different once I reach my Adi?

Step 5: Keep it simple and specific

Your goals should be simple and easy to understand. For example, if you want to save $2,000 for a new car by Christmas, that’s better than saying, I want to become wealthy. While both are noble pursuits, one is more realistic than another. Similarly, don’t say I want to eat healthier as your goal; instead, try will eat five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Keep things specific and measurable so that you can see progress quickly. Being specific also keeps you focused on one thing versus a laundry list of items that may not move you closer to your goal at all.

Step 6: Track your progress

Keep a running list of every goal you’re working on, from small to big, and update it as you complete tasks. Seeing your progress will help keep you motivated as you work toward completing your actionable goals. And don’t forget to reward yourself when you’ve accomplished something! (And if a task is too large for one day, break it down into smaller tasks). Step 7: Celebrate every success you have!

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to change is failing to acknowledge success. There’s an old saying that people are successful because they believe in themselves, not because they are inherently brilliant. To change something, you must first believe it can be changed. So look for every opportunity to acknowledge yourself for a job well done and celebrate your success! For example, if you have reduced your caloric intake by 200 calories per day as a result of incorporating some healthy foods into your diet, keep track of how much weight you lose each week as a result—it will motivate you to keep going and make things even better!
